Lately I have become somewhat of a Jack Reacher fan. Even though I saw the movie some time ago starring Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, I still did not search out the books about the guy. Recently I was given the first Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child and after reading it I was hooked.I like to know everything about a character in an action novel and decided to purchase this book (Jack Reacher’s Rules) which gives an interesting and informative outline of how Jack thinks about all kinds of things. I found this 152 page hardcover book, with an introduction by Lee Child, who created the Jack Reacher character, a quick and enjoyable read. It covers more than 55 areas of Jack’s rules which came from the Lee Child’s numerous novels.Some of the areas covered include the following: “Be prepared, choose your weapons, the United States Army Military Police, the rules of coffee, conquer your fear, confronting death, cracking codes and passwords, fighting, fighting tips, hand-to-hand combat, how to shake hands, hitchhiking rules, West Point, Lessons learned in the military, Hogan’s alley, how to tell if they’re lying, Reacher’s moral code, the science of the perfect shot, why it’s not smart to have a phone, how to win the battle, how to win the war” and much, much more.Even though some of the reviews were critical of this book I personally liked it because it gave me a guide to follow when I read more of Jack Reacher novels.Rating: 4 Stars. A very quick read-through reminds you of the unique way Jack Reacher lives his life. He's a survivor with a good heart. He usually decides to protect someone along the way - literally - or protecting their rights. He's a hero. This is a tongue in cheek look at how Reacher survives.There is not a story here, this is NOT a novel. So, don't buy this if you think you'll be getting a story.

Read all of Jack Reacher novels in order. Enjoyed them and even the short stories...BUT THIS IS JUST random sentences triple spaced from the novels and elsewhere grouped by broad subject matter. Like reading random FaceBook posts. There is a whole chapter that is just a list of acronyms with the words making up the acronyms as explanations. There is no way anyone would set out to "write" this - it looks like the editors just did a phrase search on their hard drive containing all the Reacher novels and printed out the results. Don't waste your money. Only reason I posted one star is that Amazon requires it in order to post review!

This tiny little book (4.7X7.8) is a sham. Do not buy it. I would be surprised if anyone has actually read the entire book, as it is simply a collection of out of context snippets from other Reacher novels. This is not a novel.I have attempted to get a refund from Amazon and was effectively told to pound sand.Lee Child and Amazon have made a mistake in publishing and selling this book. They only compound the problem by not taking responsibility for the situation they have created.

If you've read the Reacher books, this is really more of a compendium of "Reacherisms" he uses throughout the novels.I own the entire series and purchased this to round out the collection.If you're a fan, it's kind of a fun read, but the content isn't anything really new.

As an avid reader and self-confessed bibliophile, I love reading about books, libraries, and of course bookstores. FOOTNOTES FROM THE WORLD'S GREATEST BOOKSTORES is a treasure that I will savor again and again. There is no real order to this catalog of beloved bookstores around the globe but to me, that's part of this book's charm. I can flip through pages and land on some wondrous place located thousands of miles away or perhaps closer to home. The footnotes are often charming themselves, at times laugh out loud funny, and even a little outrageous.The artwork on each page is beautiful, featuring watercolor depictions of famous and well-loved bookstores around the world. As I read, I listed some stores that I told myself I must visit someday.There is a certain sense of poignancy in reading this book, because as one reads about the independent bookstores that continue to survive, there is a sense of mourning for those that didn't make it and are long gone. I often tell myself and those that care to listen that a world without bookstores would be a terrible, lonely world bereft of all that warmth and sense of anticipation - I feel so alive when I walk into a bookstore - there's something magical about the experience. This book keeps me optimistic that brick and mortar bookstores, no matter the challenges (the irony that I am posting this on Amazon is not lost on me here), will endure, God willing. If you love books and the bookstore experience, treat yourself to this lovely gem - you won't be sorry.

This book is a treasure for anyone who loves books. The format is so unique and appealing. The illustrations are beautiful and bring a sense of nostalgia. I have purchased multiple copies and will be giving them as gifts. The perfect coffee table book.

After some tests at school, I used to trot off to the bookstore near my house in return to my efforts and persistence toward that. I was unable to buy all books I crave for. I had to struggle against my lust to read all books. It was tough agony for a little child to bear. I remember those bittersweet moments when I got close to the resister. The middle-aged man was friendly but didn’t seem to guess those issues inside of me. Because of that, I was always happy to step in the bookstore but had to step out in thirsty for left books in there. I longed to live for good in bookstores, I long to be buried in bookstores like Michael Cunningham. (Don’t take me wrong. He is alive now.) I cannot peruse all books so I had to compromise with myself. This book seems to me as the precious reservoir for me in this sense. The author Bob’s gathered a variety of tales related to bookstores across the world and provided those with his exquisite illustrations. Particularly I was enchanted by the eloquent, rarely frank confession from bookstore owners. They reveal the attractive anecdotes with celebrities and crippling publishing industry. But as always those people in reading are not mortified. I was able to feel some undefeated hope about books. I’d like to engrave Garrison Keillor’s words. “But everything is ripe for revival.” I’m with him. Because I cannot trample on my dream in my childhood easily. I cannot imagine the world without books.

This was a present for my book lover who's lived all over the States.He would've loved it on it's own but being able to visit stores from where he's been was a great treat that,made it impossible for him to put this down.He was especially enjoyed the Garrison Keillor forward.A wonderful intro from a talented storyteller.The book opens vertically & the pages open horizontally so you're looking at bookshelves like you're in a bookstore,while thumbing through the illustrated pages of bookstores. It's quite enchanting.The illustrations are wonderful.Makes you feel like you are walking down an intimate street with anticipation discover surprise treasure.Covers everything from JK Rowlings inspiration for Hogwarts in Portugal to,Bethlehem's first & continuously running bookstore from before America's independence.If you're a book lover or just nostalgic for the rare breed of small, independently owned bookstore,This is a must have & rare treat.

a charming book, filled with mini tales of the people who visited these spots, why they loved them, and occasional moments of humor or pathos...the only complaint about this volume is the construction of the cover...it does not open as a normal cover would, and it makes the book hard to read in bed!

That being said, Ms. Gallagher is a resident of the country's most urban environment and may not necessarily be well placed to pass judgement on the types of communities she has clearly personally rejected as "good."The most interesting parts were the discussion how we got here and some of the challenges presented for the future by the current housing stock. The introduction to New Urbanism was also very interesting, as I'm familiar with, but could never name these distinct communities.I think the discussion around future drivers of change in housing demand lacked much support, however. We get a massive amount of detail around the creation of suburban communities thanks to GM-inspired futurism, how they no longer encourage "neighborliness" because there are less children around, and how their street designs discourage human contact while encouraging traffic accidents etc etc. But besides these "negative" innate characteristics of suburban communities (which are likely considered positives when viewed differently by many of the residents of these homes), the author doesn't really suggest more than one reason why everyone will be abandoning them which she strongly suggests will happen.That one reason? Gas prices.This seems like an massive over-simplification. There was no discussion of the major technological changes happening to automobiles a this very moment. Gas prices are likely to be much less important to consumers 20 years from now than they are today. Even more critically, the author does not mention the massive technological revolution that has changed how many, many people work. The requirement to actually go and sit in a physical office day in and day out is on the decline in most every industry. Cheap telephony and the rise of the internet enable people to stay in communication wherever they are and fewer and fewer people are making the trek into the office each day. Additionally, many of these offices are no longer in the urban core as companies move closer to where their employees live. This will expand, rather than contract, some people's choices on housing. I was really quite surprised at the omission. Sometimes key data or perspectives appear to be left out because they would conflict with the author's overall message and personal opinion.Finally, I was disappointed that there was no discussion on what's next for suburbs other than to suggest that farther flung ones will be abandoned and will turn into ghettoes. This is not terribly helpful. If the author believes that the suburbs do not provide the housing stock people of the future will want, I'd love to hear ways people have for transforming the already built environment into something that WILL be what people want. There is limited amounts of land around metropolitan areas and most of it has been developed. And much of it is suburban housing stock. These homes cannot be just discarded if people want to avoid all this driving, as the author suggests they do. It is likewise not possible to simply bulldoze them and re-zone the land. Homes in these communities will remain desirable because of where they are located particularly in pricey coastal cities, even if the community's character is not people would design today. So what can we do to revitalize these places for the future Ms. Gallagher?I recommend this--it seems to have some missing pieces--but it made me think a lot before I would agree or disagree with each premise proffered. That is the sign of a good book.

This book is a quick read, and hits all the major points of its thesis very well. Proofreading could have been better, though. A sprinkling of misspelled words, a scattering of weird sentence constructions. Did any actual human check this text?The book sometimes reads as advice and explanations to housing developers, sometimes as a study of historical forces and sociological trends. It is a good overview for the casual reader who is interested in our changing society and the shift that happened after the housing meltdown.— from Mrs. CyberDad

I liked the book. Unfortunately it raised more questions that it answered. The author has a very interesting point of view and the book read well. By the second part of the book, there was some repetition and the book seemed to focus only on the upper middle class individuals. Also the book raised gentrification without defining it nor explaining how it affects neighborhoods. This is a good book to introduce the concepts, and as the start of a conversation about the suburbs.

Really enjoyed this book. Helped that the author lived minutes from where I grew up so I was very familiar with her tome. Unfortunately I am now living in the exurbs as she describes but at least I know I'm not as alone in this as I thought I was. Hopefully she will write another book about how to escape this type of living that I feel trapped in. She was so right with so many statements that my husband has told me were in my mind. I'm leaving this type of life, with or without him. Exurbs of nothing lead to nothing and to me are pointless. Still wondering why I wasted a fortune going to a top university to marry and end up here. DH isn't from here. This happened by fluke.

I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about this topic since I'm a real estate agent focused on urban properties and I see the movement of people from the suburbs into the city, but there was a lot of information in this book that I didn't know. It was very readable and well researched, it's like reading a New York Times feature article -- very enjoyable and interesting!

The writer makes market trends and demographics shifts entertaining to read. What more could you ask for? I have lived in rural and urban areas, but I really thought I knew something about suburban life since it's so prominent in pop culture. Oh, boy, there's a lot I didn't understand about the suburban experience and how it's changing! I gulped this book down and am recommending it to everyone I know involved in policy. There's a counterintuitive epiphany on every page. Read it on the Kindle and might buy it in paperback to let people borrow it.

Does a nice job explaining how various styles of development came to be, and gets into whether current trends will hold up over time. Factors like rising gas prices and the trend back toward urban living may impact the fringes of metropolitan areas. it has a conversational tone. Very accessible to anyone interested in understanding residential housing developments a bit better.
